Dear Friends,

There will be a graveside internment service for Beth Manning Duncan (class of 1959) at the OLD Chapel Hill Cemetery on Saturday, June 15 at 3:00pm. Carol  Manning Walker (Beth’s sister) (class of 1960) is planning a reception at Beth’s daughter’s home at 4043 Hamlet Chapel Road, Pittsboro (about 10 miles south of Chapel Hill) for those attending the service, and she needs to know how many guests to plan for.  If you are planning to come to this service and the reception, please let me know by June 10 so I can give Carol a head count.

Dear Friends and Family,

My nephew Gregory Fields Carlisle, son of my brother Jack and wife Jeanette Henderson Carlisle died in a plane crash today in Manteo, NC.  His plane went down in the sound at Manteo and they have not recovered his body.  They called off the search about five o’clock and will resume the search in the morning.  His secretary was on board and was rescued and taken to the local hospital.  She said the plane flipped over………she swam around to the pilots side, but could not see Greg. I ask for your prayers for our family.  Jack & Jeanette lost their oldest daughter, Kathy, to a brain tumor 10 years ago.  I can’t even imagine how they are holding on.

Love,

Elizabeth Carlisle Naughton

Popular hangout for Armstrong, other astronauts is for sale one small step from UNC

Fifty years ago, Neil Armstrong and Elliot See drove up to Carol Jenzano’s Chapel Hill home and got out of their car, still wearing flight suits.

Jenzano, a high school student at the time, was sitting on the porch when the astronauts arrived.

“They were just delightful guys you would love to have as your next-door neighbor,” she said. “And they were so much brighter than you can imagine.”

The Jenzano home, once a popular hangout for visiting astronauts, is now for sale. The home, located at 37 Oakwood Drive, is on the market for $300,000.

See and Armstrong, who died Saturday, came to Chapel Hill for astronaut training at the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center. On that day, instead of going to their motel, they joined their colleagues for a visit at the Jenzano home.

Carol Jenzano’s father, Anthony Jenzano, was director of the Morehead Planetarium from 1951 to 1982.

He pioneered the planetarium’s astronaut training program, which brought 62 of the first 63 American astronauts to Chapel Hill between 1959 and 1975.

Carol Jenzano met many astronauts who frequented her family’s home, but Armstrong was one of her favorites, she said.

Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon in 1969.

“He looked like the all-American boy,” Jenzano said. “He talked like the all-American boy. He told funny stories. He had a very self-effacing humor, and he was one of the nicest men I ever met.”

Her father felt the same way, she said.

“My father had tremendous respect and admiration for what these fellows were doing.”

Anthony Jenzano started the planetarium’s astronaut training program with the goal of teaching astronauts about celestial navigation.

“Jenzano recognized that the astronauts … may encounter times when their systems would fail, and it would be incredibly useful for them to have a good understanding of the night sky,” said Jeff Hill, director of external relations at the planetarium.

“Almost from the very beginning he had the vision that the Morehead could serve an important role in the space race.”

Anthony Jenzano pitched the idea to NASA, who began sending astronauts to Chapel Hill for training.

While the excitement over space exploration has quieted down today, Lee Shapiro —who became the planetarium’s director after Anthony Jenzano — doesn’t think it’s over.

“I would like to see us go back to the moon. I’d like to see us go to Mars,” Shapiro said. “I’m not expecting it to happen in the next couple years, but I’d like to see it as a goal.”

Carol Jenzano said she will take the memories of her home with her when she moves. She said she hopes the house’s new owners will appreciate its history — just as she does.

“I feel that my life was so enriched by having the opportunity to meet so many fantastic Americans,” she said. “I have met more since, but I met a whole lot as a young girl.

We lost a great lady, a great teacher, a great principal, and friend with the passing of Miss May Marshbanks at age 95, on August 21st. Her sister, Mrs Nancy Bales, called me this afternoon with the sad news. There is no way to know how many lives she touched or how far her influence extended over the years. I do know that she told me many times of her love for her “young’uns” as she called us and how much she liked to hear from us.
A great educator who was the first woman in North Carolina to be appointed as a senior high school principal, she also possessed an enormous gift as a musician, and was involved in later years in humanitarian work as well. She will be missed but her life’s work will live on.
The family will have a private burial service but there will be a memorial service at the First Baptist Church of Buies Creek at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 25th, 2012. There will be a visitation following the service.

Margot and I went by to see Miss May on Saturday, May 5th. She is now bedridden but is still very alert and sharp as a tack.

She deeply appreciates visits, and especially cards, and letters, from her former students. She will be 95 on Sunday, May 20th, and I wanted to encourage all CHHS Wildcats to send her a birthday card to make that day special. She has no phone or TV in her room and I suspect the days get a bit long for her. She reads and does crossword and other type puzzles. She says it helps keep her mind sharp. She does love to see visitors and if you happen to be in the Dunn area go by and brighten her day.

Her address is :

Betsy Carson Rupe

Susan Keith-Lucas Carson’s daughter Betsy Carson Rupe died on Tuesday evening.

I know that some of you have been following Betsy’s long illness on Caring Bridge (www.caringbridge.org/visit/betsyrupe/journal) and know of Betsy’s courageous approach to her suddenly discovered illness in 2009.  Here are Susan’s most recent entries:

Betsy Carson Rupe

Betsy died at 10:30 Tuesday evening. She went very gently and got to say goodbye to each of her boys, Allan and me in the evening. No memorial service plans yet –maybe this weekend, maybe next week; we’ll know more soon. Thank you for all your love, support and prayers over these very hard two years.

Memorial Service for Betsy The memorial service for Betsy Carson Rupe will be Sunday, January 15, at 4 p.m. at All Saints Chapel on the campus of TMI- The Episcopal School of Texas, 20955 Tejas Trail, San Antonio (www.tmi-sa.org)

Memorial gifts made be made to the Betsy Rupe Scholarship Fund at TMI or to Smile Train. At the time we were planning our 50th reunion in 2009 – 2010, Susan and her husband were spending most of their time in San Antonio helping with Betsy’s three young sons, and she asked that we not distribute her addresses.  She has agreed that now we can publish her e-mail address, which is sue@suecarson.com.

I know our thoughts and prayers are with Susan and her family.  Having lost an adult daughter myself, I know from personal experience that the death of a child is probably the most tragic of all the things that can happen to you in life.
